How a healthcare research agency used pre-tasking to gain a greater understanding of the lives of patients suffering with a long-term illness
Understanding the lives of patients is the key to providing adequate care and medication to alleviate their suffering. For that reason, healthcare research is critical in the process of developing medication and services that improve the lives of patients. Healthcare research can include many different methodologies of research from focus-groups, in-depth interviews to observations. By understanding engaging with patients, it highlights the challenges that long-term illnesses present to sufferers. Ultimately, this allows the development of solutions that can greatly improve the quality of life for patients.
When our client approached us, they were trying to understand the lives of patients with a long-term illness. In order to understand these patients, they planned to conduct interviews and focus-groups with the patients. However, given the personal nature of illness, many of the respondents did not feel fully comfortable in talking about their lives or illness with strangers.
This was understandable, but it meant that gaining a clear insight into how their personal lives were impacted by the illness was difficult.
As a result, designing services and medication that served the daily needs of sufferers was a challenge.
Our clients objectives were to:
Get to know respondents more personally before engaging them in focus groups and IDIs
Gain an real-life, in-context periscope into the daily lives of respondents living with a long-term illness
Understand how a long-term illness affected the lives of sufferers and see what actions they took to cope with their condition
When our client approached us, we were confident that Mobile Qualitative Research project could serve as the perfect pre-tasking method for their overall project. Because respondents would have access to their mobile throughout a full week, they would be able to give in-the-moment feedback on what they were feeling and experience and the role their illness was playing in it all. Furthermore, respondents were more likely to be honest and open about their illness when they were recording their responses in private. Because we have become so accustomed to interacting through our smartphones, respondents find recording their responses on their devices in their own homes more natural and unintrusive.
Working with Indeemo, our client created task list assigning 26 scheduled tasks to respondents over the course of 2 weeks. Much of the first week focussed on understanding the daily routines and rituals of respondents when it came to medications, coping strategies and how they felt. The second weeks tasks then focussed on their feelings and memories surrounding the diagnosis, and how they felt on each given day over the course of the week.
Over the course of the 2 weeks, respondents uploaded almost 2,000 videos, photos and text notes giving media rich, in-the-moment into how they lived with their condition. This gave our client a far more in-depth and authentic insight into the lives of their respondents. As respondents uploaded their responses, our client was also able to build up a trust and rapport with respondents using Indeemo’s in-the-moment probing feature which allowed them to correspond in real-time. By pre-tasking the respondents and engaging with them in this manner meant that they had a better relationship with respondents by the time they conducted focus-groups and IDIs with them.
