Methodology · Concept Testing

Real reactions in real homes, on the devices people actually use.

Concept testing in Indeemo means asynchronous, in-context evaluation of concepts, ads, packaging and propositions, on the participant's own device, in their own home, with first-reaction selfie video and structured ratings.

Why Concept Testing In Indeemo

Three things concept testing in Indeemo gives you that focus groups can't

First reactions, captured before the room shapes them

In a focus group, participants negotiate their reaction with the room. By the time the moderator asks, the answer is shaped by what other people said. Indeemo captures the first reaction, alone, on selfie video, before social filtering kicks in.

In real life, where the concept will actually live

A concept on a screen in a hotel meeting room reads differently than the same concept on a phone in someone's kitchen. Indeemo evaluates concepts in the environment they'll actually live in: the home, the commute, the morning routine.

Concepts at speed, decisions at scale

Multiple concepts evaluated by dozens of participants across several markets, in days. Quant ratings, qual selfie video, and AI theme detection together. The depth of qual, the scale of quant, the speed of digital.

How It Works In Indeemo

A concept testing study, end to end

Four stages, one platform: from plan to deliver.
Woman working at laptop.
01
Plan
Targeted screening on category usage, life stage, and brand affinity: current customers, prospects, lapsed users, competitor loyalists. Then design first-reaction tasks: stimulus exposure, selfie-video first reaction, sentiment ratings, open-ended reflection. Repeat across concepts with randomised exposure to prevent halo.
02
Capture
Participants view each concept in turn, then immediately record a 30 to 60 second selfie reaction. They give a sentiment rating and a one-line written reflection. The ratings build a sequence of sentiments across concepts (or over time), so you can see how attitudes move from one concept to the next. All on their own device, in their own time, before they've heard anyone else's view.

03
Analyse
Concept-by-concept rating dashboards. AI transcription and theme detection across selfie reactions. Cross-cohort comparison: market by market, segment by segment. The why behind the score.

04
Deliver
Top concepts ranked with quant scores. Reaction reels of the moments of delight, doubt, dismissal. Tagged clips by theme. The brand team sees the eyebrow-raise. The decision lands.
Where Indeemo Fits

How Indeemo fits concept testing

Dimension
Common approach
What Indeemo adds
Setting
A focus group around a table in a recruitment lab, or a monadic survey on a screen.
Each participant alone, on their own device, in their own home: the environment the concept will actually live in.
First reaction
Reactions are shared aloud in a group setting, or captured as a rating separate from the moment of viewing.
A short selfie video of the unfiltered first reaction, captured before any group discussion.
Data type
Moderator discussion notes from the group, or a scale rating on its own.
Quant rating, qual selfie video, and open-ended text reflection, captured per concept.
Speed
Fielding runs over several weeks, often one market at a time, with findings reported at the end.
Multiple markets and concepts evaluated in parallel, with ranked concepts and reaction reels stakeholders can watch.
Inside The Study

What a researcher actually configures

Sample reaction task

A concept exposure with a selfie reaction, in randomised order. "We've sent you three concepts. Look at each one for one minute, your real reaction, in real time. Then tell us in 30 seconds: which one made you feel something, and why."

Sample sentiment task

A sentiment rating plus an open-text note, captured per concept. "After each concept, rate how it makes you feel (1 to 5). Then a one-line written note: which one would actually make you change your behaviour?"

Sample analysis output

A cross-concept ranking with a qual theme map. "Concept B: highest appeal (4.2 avg), but lowest distinctiveness (2.8). Concept C: lower appeal (3.6), higher distinctiveness (4.4). Theme: B is comfortable, C is provocative. Which is the brief?"

"We can say to people, just go wild, use it as you would use it, do whatever works for you, and just report back honestly to us. That's probably the closest we can get to finding out what people actually do in the real world."

Concept Testing, answered

‍How long should a concept testing study run?
‍It depends on the design. Some studies field quickly for first reactions; others run across days or weeks for longitudinal in-context testing. The platform paces to the study, so you can run shorter or longer to match what the project needs.
‍How many concepts can I test in one study?
Indeemo is flexible: you can test a single concept or as many as the study needs, in rotated or monadic designs. The platform scales to whatever the brief demands.
How many participants do I need?
‍For a single cohort with qualitative depth, 10 to 20 participants is typical. Multi-cohort or multi-market designs (e.g. market 1 vs. market 2, or rotated concept pools) scale from there to whatever the study needs, balancing depth per cohort with breadth across cohorts.
‍What kind of stimulus can I test?
Static images (packs, ads, posters), video (TVCs, social ads), text concepts (propositions, names, headlines), interactive prototypes (linked from the Indeemo task). Indeemo handles all standard stimulus formats.
‍Can I run concept tests across multiple markets and languages?
‍Yes. Capture in 30+ languages with AI transcription and translation. Run all markets in parallel during the same fielding window.
How does this compare to a survey monadic?
‍A survey monadic gets you a rating. Indeemo gets you a rating plus a short selfie video of the actual reaction: the eyebrow raise, the half-smile, the puzzled pause. The why behind the score, on video.
Is the data secure and consent-compliant?
Yes. Indeemo is ISO 27001 and SOC 2 certified, GDPR-aligned, with EU and US data residency options. See Trust & Security for details.
What kind of analysis output do I get?
Researchers in Indeemo tag entries, track themes, work with AI-detected patterns across selfie reactions, compare across cohorts and markets, and build stakeholder-ready highlight reels that rank concepts.
